Glass in Ikebana: Inside, Outside, Around

Glass leaves no room to hide.
What is hidden in ceramic containers suddenly becomes visible. Fixation, stems, water, and even empty space start to play an active role.

At the same time, not all glass is fully transparent. Some surfaces reveal everything, while others soften or partially conceal what is inside. This opens up a new field of exploration.

In this workshop, we move beyond the idea of simply placing materials in a vase. You will learn to compose inside, outside, and around the container. We will experiment with submerged elements, floating compositions, and glass bulbs, discovering how transparency and opacity influence your design.

What You’ll Learn

  • How to create clean, unobtrusive fixation, even when working with transparent containers

  • How to use water, stems, and empty space as part of your composition

  • The difference between transparent and more opaque glass, and how each affects the result

  • How to design inside, outside, and around the container

  • Ways to create a more light, open, and cooling feeling in your arrangements
